Q&A with Notitia Analytics Lead + Health Data Expert, Lachlan Hamilton
Notitia’s Analytics Lead, Lachy, works closely with our clients to help them to get the most value out of their analytics projects.
His passion for using data to improve healthcare is based on his years of experience as a health data specialist and undergrad degree in biomedicine, majoring in bioengineering systems.
Lachlan partners with Notitia's clients to understand their unique needs and tailor data solutions to help them to achieve their business objectives.
He works alongside Notitia’s team of skilled analytics consultants, UX, UI designers, web developers and data quality and governance experts, across a range of projects.
What do you do in your role as Notitia’s Data Analyst Lead?
“My day can be anything from hands-on development, writing code, client meetings and combining and visualising data,” Lachy says.
"I do anything from supporting clients with their existing analytics environment, automating reporting, training and upskiling - right through to big project work where clients may want to develop a new analytic solution from the ground up, to service a particular need in their business.
“As an analytics consultant, it’s also crucial to stay ahead of industry trends; identify potential growth areas for Notitia's analytics services, and continuously refine our analytics methodologies and tools."
What do you love about working with Notitia clients?
It’s always satisfying when we uncover something in a data set for a client that they hadn’t seen before.
I get to put on my scientist hat which, at the core, drives data analytics.
In one recent example that comes to mind - our client had been working with their data set for a while, but hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary.
When the Notitia Team applied a systematic and visual analysis to their data, we uncovered a really interesting trend, which initiated that question ‘what is actually going on here and what action needs to be taken?’
For our client, having that specific lens on their data can change the whole direction of their strategy and I find it rewarding to have that impact on businesses and solve their problems.
How does your background in biomedical science and bioengineering help your work as a data scientist?
When I started out as a data analyst, I naturally gravitated to health care clients because I was “health literate”.
As my career progressed, I've continued to be interested in and servicing the needs of health care clients.
I've worked a lot with Primary Health Networks (PHNs) over the years and I've developed an understanding of their challenges and opportunities as organisations to address complex health related problems.
PHNs have access to really fascinating data, including anonymised data about every patient that visits a general practice in their region, every month. It’s really powerful what they can do with that information.
