West Gippsland Healthcare Group: Leading the Way in Healthcare Innovation

In the News: Proving what’s possible when data & healthcare align

West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG) has made headlines for their recent Qlik award win "Excellence in Healthcare" for their digital transformation journey.Their recent recognition at the 2024 Qlik ANZ Digital Transformation Awards is a testament to their commitment to innovation and improving patient care through smarter data practices.

Featured in The Gazette, "Major Award for WG Healthcare Group" the article highlights the positive impact that their data transformation has had on patients, staff, and the community.

The Data-Driven Journey

WGHG's transformation goes beyond technology. The hospital has reshaped how they manage and use data, creating new efficiencies and empowering their teams to make better decisions. From clinicians to administrators, the benefits of this new approach are being felt across the organisation.

Working alongside Notitia, WGHG implemented Qlik Cloud Analytics to address key challenges in their data management processes. The goal was to create a single source of truth—a robust, centralised data environment that would empower healthcare leaders to make informed, timely decisions.

As WGHG’s Activity Based Funding Manager, Robyn Weeks, explained, this transformation provided unprecedented levels of insight:

“It provides, at the fingertips, the ability to drill down to information levels that we’ve never had before.”

Turning Data Into Action

One of the standout achievements of this collaboration was the development of self-service dashboards. Tailored to meet the needs of various departments, these dashboards enable WGHG’s team—from clinicians to administrators—to access actionable data insights specific to their roles.

For example, Ms Weeks described how clinicians now review chest pain treatment frameworks with greater efficiency:

“Instead of manually going through each case, clinicians can get results back from testing to identify areas for staff education and improvements in diagnosis. It’s been a significant time saver.”

Real-Time Insights, Real Impact

The implementation of Qlik Cloud Analytics has also enhanced WGHG’s ability to:

  • Monitor service performance: Tracking patient volumes and workforce resourcing with real-time data.
  • Meet funding requirements: Aligning with government funding targets through accurate insights into the National Weighted Activity Unit (NWAU).
  • Streamline decision-making: Providing consistent, accurate data to address operational challenges swiftly.

This data transformation is not just about internal improvements; it’s a testament to how healthcare organisations can use technology to improve patient outcomes.

The Role of Partnership

WGHG’s success is a testament to the power of collaboration. By partnering with Notitia, they’ve leveraged expertise in data strategy, implementation, and training to achieve their goals.

Notitia’s Managing Director, Alex Avery, expressed his admiration for WGHG’s forward-thinking approach:

“West Gippsland Healthcare Group are among the best examples of digital transformation in Australian healthcare. Congratulations to the team for this well-deserved win.”

A Model for the Future

As healthcare continues to evolve, WGHG’s journey serves as a blueprint for how data can drive both operational excellence and patient care improvements. This story demonstrates how embracing innovative technologies, like Qlik Cloud Analytics, can create lasting change.
