Q&A with Notitia Developer Ben Cuttance

Meet Ben Cuttance, Notitia’s newest web developer. With a background that spans healthcare and technology, Ben brings a fresh perspective to problem-solving, blending technical expertise with a user-first mindset. After five years in the ICU as a nurse, Ben pivoted to web development to pursue his passion for building creative solutions. Working out of our Adelaide office, Ben works closely with Senior Web Developer, Brett and Developer Livia to create seamless, data-driven web applications for our clients.

🚀 His journey into tech is anything but ordinary— making the leap from Registered Nurse to Full Stack Developer — which we think is pretty incredible.

💻 Armed with front-end & back-end development, database, and UI design experience, Ben is all about building user-friendly web & software applications.

💪 Given Ben's background in high-pressure healthcare environments, his adaptability, collaboration & attention to detail is a huge asset to our team.

🌟 Ben brings a people-first mindset, razor-sharp problem-solving skills & that healthy dose of curiosity (the reason why we all love what we do at Notitia!)

What is your role at Notitia?

I work as a full stack developer, helping to build web solutions for clients. My role involves both front-end and back-end development, ensuring that the applications we create are intuitive, functional, and efficient. I collaborate with the web development team to deliver secure, scalable applications that integrate seamlessly with data systems and APIs.

What does a day-to-day project look like for you?

Right now, I’m working on a UI for an overview web page that connects with YouTube via an API. This dashboard will allow the client to track the performance of their videos in real time. While I’m currently focused on the front-end, I’ll soon be working on the back-end as well—creating the API that gathers and displays YouTube data. It’s an exciting challenge that combines my technical skills with problem-solving.

Tell us about your work background?

I originally studied a Bachelor of Nursing and worked in healthcare, specifically in the intensive Care Unit (ICU) for five years. That role required quick thinking, collaboration, and a deep understanding of complex systems—skills that have translated well into tech.

After deciding to pivot into web development, I completed a coding bootcamp certificate to gain hands-on experience and technical training. Now, I’m applying those skills in a field where I can continue solving problems, but in a completely new way.

Why did you choose web development?

I wanted a creative job - to be able to create something that I could show my friends and family. I really enjoy problem solving in coding. I often find that when I’m thinking about a problem, I’ll have a light bulb moment that causes a breakthrough - allowing me to solve the problem, and I absolutely love that feeling.

Tell us more about how nursing has shaped your approach to work today?

Transitioning from ICU nursing to web development might seem like a big leap, but for me, the skills acquired in healthcare have been invaluable.

As an ICU nurse, I had to think quickly in life-threatening situations, operate and monitor life-support equipment, and accurately record patient progress and interventions. I worked closely with doctors, specialists, and other healthcare professionals, often supporting patients and families through incredibly difficult times.

My role demanded adaptability, clear communication, and fast decision-making under pressure, while also requiring me to collaborate effectively with teams and translate complex information into clear, actionable insights.

What are some of the biggest challenges working in web development?

Having recently moved into web development, I’m motivated and enthusiastic. I’ve worked hard to get here, and I’m always eager to learn, improve, and push myself to grow. Every project presents a new opportunity to refine my skills and expand my knowledge.

What’s a common ‘aha’ moment clients have when working with you?

I’d like to think that we don’t just implement solutions the way clients expect—we go a step further. Often, we’ll add small enhancements or improvements they hadn’t considered, which make a big difference to usability or functionality.

What do you enjoy about working with clients?

I enjoy working with people, and that’s something I carried over from my time as a nurse. I like engaging with clients in a professional setting, understanding their needs, and delivering solutions that help their businesses. There’s something really rewarding about seeing a product go live and knowing it meets the client’s expectations.

What will businesses focus on in 2025 when it comes to web development?

Client satisfaction. It’s not just about delivering a product—it’s about delivering an experience that makes clients want to keep working with you. Building strong relationships, understanding their needs, and providing ongoing value will be key.
