Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR): A more inclusive approach to employment support

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) needed a more accessible and efficient website that would help Australians—especially those from diverse backgrounds—to connect with local employment services.

To meet this need, DEWR partnered with Notitia to build a customised, location-based web solution that makes it easier for people to find the right support, no matter who they are or where they live.

The challenge: Building access and personalisation into one experience

DEWR’s existing site wasn’t meeting the needs of all users. The interface was clunky, the site wasn’t optimised for mobile, and accessibility requirements weren’t fully met.

Key challenges included:

  • Accessibility compliance: The site needed to adhere to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to serve users with varying levels of digital literacy and physical ability.
  • Personalised user journeys: Many visitors were unsure where to start. The website needed to guide people to the right services based on their needs and location.
  • Responsive design: Mobile compatibility was critical, as many users access services on the go or without access to a desktop computer.

The solution: A responsive and inclusive platform built for impact

Notitia worked closely with DEWR to build a mobile-ready, accessible website with intuitive design, and real-time location-based filtering.

✅ Human Centred Design Processes: Intuitive UX for every user

The new website design focused on accessibility from the ground up. Using human centred design principles, our design team ensured smooth navigation across all devices and user types. An interactive map and dynamic filters made it easier than ever to discover relevant resources.

📍 Location-based insights using Qlik

Using Qlik Sense Mashups, the website now recognises a visitor’s IP address to offer localised information. This means users are automatically directed to the programs and providers closest to them—without needing to search.

🔍 Smart filtering to find the right support

The platform includes dynamic filters for users to narrow down search results by program type, provider, employment region, statistical area, and state. The “Find Site Near You” feature offers a guided, stress-free experience.

🗺️ Interactive map navigation

The custom-built interactive map allows users to explore their region and identify nearby services visually, enhancing usability and making the experience more engaging and practical.

The Result: A platform designed for real-world use

The redesigned platform delivers major improvements for both end users and internal stakeholders.

  • Enhanced accessibility and usability: The simplified design and WCAG-compliant approach ensure that more people can confidently use the platform—whether from mobile, desktop, or assistive technologies.
  • Improved resource discovery: Location-based guidance and dynamic filters help users find relevant information faster and more accurately.
  • Mobile-ready solution: The responsive interface allows people to access the site on the go, expanding the reach and utility of DEWR’s services.
